Goths, chavs and advertising

[tweetmeme source=”adamanddan” only_single=false] When we were at school, growing up, there were many trends/fads that passed us by. One of the first ones we became aware of was the goth stage.

We had goth friends who used to dress to make a statement.

Black hoodies, long hair, dark make up.

They said they wanted to be different. After all why should they be like everyone else?

And it got them noticed. People used to look at them and talk about them.

Then the chav stage came in. The chavs wanted to rebel. They didn’t want to stick to the traditional rules, so they did things that drew attention to themselves.

And people started speaking about them. Everytime they did something outrageous they were the talk of the school.

But eventually the goths and the chavs attracted so much attention, other started being like them. They wanted to be talked about too.

As there became more of them, noone took any notice. They just became known as the goths and the chavs. They weren’t different anymore. They were the same as the others.

It’s the same with advertising. A brand does something different that makes them stand out. People start talking about them. But then another brand copies. And then another one.

All their advertising just begins blending in together so people switch off. It’s no longer new and interesting.

They just wait until the next brand find a new way to present themselves.
